I currently have scheduled snapshots twice a day retained for a week at a time. Scrubs every 35 days FreeNAS default. I am not using compression or dedupe compression is a potential for the new system. I have not tried it again yet since moving to 9 but it is a possibility, especially since CIFS is only one-thread per user. ZFS data deduplication does not require much more ram than the non-deduplicated case. Kernel memory on the platforms where ZFS runs is not subject to swap, so something else happened on that system. The code itself is currently somewhat bad at freeing memory efficiently due to the use of SLAB allocation. A single long lived object in each slab will keep it from being freed. I was panicking for a few hours that I had pushed the envelope too far in using "exerimental" ZFS everywhere including boot. Note that this isn't actually much different from normal filesystems.
The discrepancy lies in the fact that ZFS uses it's own cache and not the one provided b the Linux VFS layer, which means that it gets reported in a different way in most tools on Linux. AustinHemmelgarn noted and unsurprising.
ThomasBrowne Oh, it's already got a reputation for hogging RAM because of people not looking into why the numbers are the way they are and of course actually needing very large amounts of RAM in certain configurations. Unfortunately, this isn't something that can realistically be resolved, because doing so would require ZFS on Linux being merged into the mainline kernel repository, which cannot legally be done for licensing reasons the CDDL is not GPL compatible.

Thats the amount of ram which remained occupied after the copy was done,and i killed all ram consuming apps Even though the copying happened with mb per second, i barely heard the disk drive spinning, which is very strange. Moreover, after i finished copying the whole stuff, the ram remained occupied.
The only way to "flush it" was to restart linux. Alas after restart,i had to import the zpool again and to mount the data sets again. Still need to figure how to make them mount at startup automagically Now the ram was free. What gives? If i had waited more, would the ram had been cleared?
How much ram does zfs really need? If i had 2tb of ram, would that have been occupied in its entirety as well? Is there a way to manually flush the occupied ram after such an intensive write session? If the dataset is being constantly written onto, should i expect the whole remaining ram to get occupied? I need between and gb of ram for my load, and I dont really have that much ram to spare. If it is indeed necessary, I could add more ram, my motherboard has 16 slots and only 8 are occupied. But hell, ive seen the whole ram load up.
Joined May 29, Messages 14, For writes, it will use a large chunk to create transaction groups that commit to disk, generally writing contiguous sequential ranges where possible. If your pool is nearly empty, you shouldn't hear much seeking seeking on writes is a sign of fragmentation. If the system itself is under memory pressure, ZFS will release portions of the ARC so that the system isn't memory starved.
You don't flush this. It self-manages. This softens a bit as the number of TB managed gets out past maybe 20 or so. But some more demanding workloads will require substantially more RAM. Joined Jan 1, Messages 5, Free RAM is wasted money.
